Diversity in the Auxiliary

The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary is a diverse volunteer organization that is a reflection of America. We are committed to embrace men and women of all racial, cultural, ethnic, and religious backgrounds as full, equal, and vital members of our organization. The Auxiliary is a team of citizens, of all age groups, that work together to as is the U. S. Coast Guard in the promotion of recreational safe boating, and support efforts to provide security of our ports, waterways and coastal regions.

The purpose of creating and maintaining a diverse organization goes beyond that which is purely the “right thing” to do. Inclusion of diverse individuals and viewpoints produces better decisions and actions.  It helps to foster an environment in which every member has the opportunity to fully contribute and obtain the success they desire.

As a volunteer organization, we have a membership with virtually a limitless amount of work and life experience. Many of us have retired from various careers of public and private jobs. Some have prior military service while others spent many years taking care of family members. No matter what path we take
or have taken in our lives, we all have an amazing amount of talent to offer as members of the U. S. Coast Guard Auxiliary.

Our mentor program and fellowship gatherings are fundamental in helping to bring us together as a team. It is true we need to be mentored in order to learn. It is also true that we learn while mentoring others. We also can learn from our fellowship gatherings that even though we are different, we often share some of the same goals and desires.

“If we cannot end now our differences, at least we can help make the world safe for diversity. For, in the final analysis, our most basic common link is that we all inhabit this small planet. We all breathe the same air. We all cherish our children's future. And we are all mortal.

[Commencement Address at American University, June 10 1963]”
